The Most Important Step in Sun Care

The most important step is to reapply your SPF product frequently especially after swimming or heavy perspiration. It’s important to wear SPF protection all year, even on cloudy days as the sun’s rays can still penetrate clouds.

Top Sunscreen Tips

SPF, or Sun Protection Factor, is a measure/guide of how well a product will protect skin from the sun’s UV rays, the kind of radiation that causes sunburn. The ultraviolet light (UVL) from the sun is grouped into two wavelengths: ultraviolet B (UVB), which are shorter, and ultraviolet A (UVA), which are longer. It's important to note that SPF predominantly protects you only against UVB rays. For UVA, you need a product labelled "broad spectrum". UVAs are responsible for collagen degeneration, fine lines, wrinkles, pigmentation, sunspots and are also a key contributor when it comes to skin cancer. UVA rays can also penetrate glass and clouds which is why it’s important to wear SPF all year.

Types of Sunscreens

Physical vs Chemical . There are two main types of sunscreen, Physical (or inorganic) vs Chemical (or organic). The key difference is based on the active ingredients within the sunscreen. There’s also only a 5 to 10 percent difference in the way these ingredients work, as both types absorb UV rays.

Physical: There are only two inorganic sunscreen ingredients approved by the FDA: zinc oxide and titanium dioxide.

Chemical: All the other active ingredients that aren’t zinc or titanium are considered chemical sunscreens ingredients. Chemical sunscreens absorb into your skin like lotion instead of forming a barrier on top of the skin. These active ingredients “cause a chemical reaction that converts the UV light into heat so that it can’t harm the skin.

COCOOIL Sunscreen: Our sunscreen is chemical based and includes organic cold-pressed coconut oil.

Should You Wear Sunscreen Indoors?

The answer? Absolutely.  Even if you’re not spending the afternoon at the pool, you’re still guaranteed to come into contact with UV rays through the window or by peeking outside. Studies show that daily use of sunscreen can significantly lower your risk for skin cancer and aging skin (defined by wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, and dark spots).
